General Information and Rules
General Information about Dave Briccetti's programming classes at DVC College for Kids
Welcome! I am Dave Briccetti (bri-chet'-ee). Please call me Mr. B, or Mr. Briccetti.
Teaching Assistants
This session's teaching assistants (TAs) are Ethan Kuefner (keef'-ner), and for Game and Story Programming only, Kyle Jacobson.
Class Procedures
Our one-hour class sessions typically consist of several lectures and demonstrations from me or the TAs, followed by plenty of time on the computers where you explore what you just learned. We use an online system called Moodle to provide our lessons, quizzes, forums, online chats and the like.
Working in the Computer Lab L149
There is a program called STARS running on the computers that tracks usage by college students. It requires you to enter a 7-digit number. Just make up a number that starts with 9 (such as 9000100) and follow the prompts on the screen to create a new STARS account for yourself. Don't put in your real name. Make one up. Later, If you forget the number you made up, just make up a new one. Yes, this is pretty silly, but the STARS program doesn't accommodate the College for Kids program, so we have to work around it.
What to Bring to Class Every Day
- Pencil or pen, and a notebook (or some other system for taking notes, and having those notes be there the next time you come)
- A floppy diskette or USB external drive
- Headphones, if you want to hear sounds from your computer
- A microphone, if you want to record sounds
Class Rules
- No gum, food, or drink (except water)
- Personal electronic devices (phones, audio players, computers) not to interfere with class
- Internet access to approved destinations only (even on your own devices)
- Respect each other, the teacher and teaching assistants, and the college students around you in the lab
- Listen and speak at the right times
- After classes are over at 4:10, students may not remain in the computer lab
Getting Help
The teacher and assistants will be in the lab to help you with your questions. If you are trying to do something very complex, we may not be able to help you, as it would take too much time and we need to help other students.
