Private Lessons

Ages, location, languages, cost, student responsibilites and lesson times

Students

Dave teaches students in grade 3 through college.

Location

Dave generally teaches in his home office in Lafayette, California, just off of Pleasant Hill Road, near Highway 24 and Acalanes High School.

Languages

Beginning programmers usually start with Python or Scratch and from there move to Java, C++, Perl, or other languages, depending on skill and interest.

Cost

An hour lesson costs $55. (Training for professionals and other non-students is available at Dave’s consulting rate, which is considerably higher.)

Student Responsibilities

For best results, students should:

  • Spend at least an hour a week on their own between lessons, practicing new skills and developing programs
  • Remember to bring materials to lessons, including notes, assignments, and the programs they are working on
  • Arrive at lessons prepared to discuss the previous lesson´s materials, and to show what they´ve done to practice their new skills

Lesson Times

Lessons can be scheduled at various times, such as after school, evenings, or weekends, or during weekdays in the summer. Once a week for an hour seems to work well for most students, but half-hour and/or less frequent lessons can work also.
