Getting Access to Moodle
I use an online system, called Moodle, to host my course content, receive assignments electronically from the students, let the students communicate electronically with each other and with me at school, and if you like, at home; and for you parents to follow what we are doing in class. You will receive your login information via email.
Our Moodle Web site is here.
This site is completely isolated from the public. No one but the teacher, students and parents will be able to enter the site. This is accomplished with two layers of password authentication.
First you will be prompted for a user name and password for "Dave Briccetti Online Courses." Supply the user name and password you received by email.
Now you have access to our Moodle site, but you are not yet logged in to Moodle. That requires a second user name and password. You should see a page that says "Dave Briccetti's Computer Programming Training," with "You are not logged in." at the top right. Select Login. Under "Returning to this web site?," enter the second user name and password. Push the Login button next to the Password field.
At the top right of the page you should now see "You are now logged in...." Click on your child's name. Push the "Change password" button and change the password to something your child will remember and other people won't guess. When you see "Password has been changed" push "Continue."
Now you can select "Edit profile" and customize your child's profile. If your child has an email address, you may want to change the email address to your child's. Moodle uses email for news announcements from me, alerts that assignments have been graded, and for messages from other students and me. You can disable your email address if you don't want these messages. If I have any official announcements for all parents I'll use my email list, which is separate from Moodle.
It would be very helpful to me, for learning names and faces, if you uploaded a photo of your child. Student pictures in Moodle are very small so it should be cropped tight around the face. As with everything else in our Moodle system, this photo will not be visible to the public.
To save the profile changes, push "Update profile" near the bottom of the page.
Please practice with your child and write down the login details, if needed, so that on the first day I can simply say to everyone, "Please log in to Moodle," and within a minute everyone will be in. If you have trouble, I'm happy to help.
